Honoring War Heroes in Fort Worth

Fort Worth Star Telegram, October 18, 2014

An 8,000-pound red granite monument honoring three fallen military men who gave their lives to save others during battle was dedicated Saturday at Veterans Memorial Park in Fort Worth. The Medal of Honor Memorial pays tribute to three Fort Worth men who received the nation’s highest military honor — Maj. Horace S. Carswell, Cpl. Charles F. Pendleton and Spc. Robert D. Law. Carswell died when his aircraft crashed during a surprise bombing run on at least 14 Japanese ships during the latter days of World War II. Pendleton was fatally wounded by mortar fire during the Korean War while repelling an enemy force. Law was killed during the Vietnam War when he smothered a grenade to save the lives of soldiers around him. — Mitch Mitchell
